18 October, 2024Barbara, leader in Edge computing for mission-critical industries, has announced its involvement in an innovative project with Iberdrola to digitize and automate the energy company's secondary substations. Leveraging its Edge Platform, Barbara will develop advanced firmware for sensorization and automation, enabling remote management of devices and seamless integration of third-party solutions.
The initiative, taking place at Iberdrola's Global Smart Grid Innovation Hub in Bilbao and the Melancólicos substation in Madrid, adopts a pioneering approach through the creation of a dynamic Living Lab. This collaborative environment will enable Iberdrola's partners to test and develop Edge computing applications, enhancing the security and flexibility of its digital network.
A standout feature of the project is the decoupling of hardware and software in substations. This innovative approach allows system upgrades without the need to replace physical equipment, resulting in significant cost savings and increased operational adaptability.
Set to last 18 months, the project aims to assess improvements in substation efficiency and service quality. Peter Rawlins, Barbara's VP of Business Development, describes the initiative as “a step forward towards more secure, flexible, and future-ready digital networks.”
This partnership further establishes Barbara as a leader in Edge computing, driving secure digital transformation across critical sectors such as energy.
